Last night we set up to remain awake for a while on the balcony of our bedroom looking across a wonderfully animated, floodlit waterhole. I could have sat there for ages. Even though the temperature in the mountains was dropping, the weather was calm. Becky and I had gathered a substantial blanket from the bed and snuggled in it on the bench. As we sat, a group of around seven Elephants took in some of the salt laden mud and drank from the well less than a hundred yards ahead of us. The forest screeched like something which could be referenced to in ‘The Blair Witch Project’ but somehow it was comforting. Watching over the clearing it was obvious when a new character entered the scene. The slightest change in the darkness stood out to our pervaying eyes. White-tailed mongoose, African hare and the general Water and Bush Bucks kept us focused until about 11:30 when we decided it was probably better to get some sleep. Going to bed surrounded by the genuine sounds of nature and the thought of what stirred outside the window beat all of those Hennie Becker CDs.

The midnight alarm calls never materialised from the night watchman. We had signed up to be made aware of any passing leopard, hyena and rhino. We can only assume the animals were otherwise engaged. I still woke at intervals to check on the show.
